North Carolina whitewater - Cartoogechaye River, Blue Ridge Mountains, Macon County
Macon
county,
Mount Hope Church to Louisa Chapel Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II(III) 2.75 miles
The wonderful Macon County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Cartoogechaye River beats anything. The average North Carolina whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are
great reasons to come. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Cartoogechaye River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Mount Hope Church to Louisa Chapel Road section is the only one.
This section of Cartoogechaye River in North Carolina is 2.75 miles long and has been rated as a class II(III) section by American Whitewater. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This is a pretty short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times.
