The wonderful Haywood County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Newport, as you can see on the road map further down. Cataloochee Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Catalooche Campground to Waterville Lake stretch is the only one. On this section you
do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. The Catalooche Campground to Waterville Lake section of Cataloochee Creek is 6 miles long and is
according to American Whitewater a class II-III(IV) section of whitewater. The Great Smoky Mountains scenery is wonderful. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. There's camping available near Cataloochee Creek. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
Briefly about the general area: Nearby Sal Patch is a good place to go if you're at Cataloochee Creek, and there are glorious spots to discover
along the Palmer Creek Trail. All through the summertime months highs here at Cataloochee Creek reach the 80's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 60's. Daytime highs during the wintertime are in the 40's, and after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Cataloochee
Creek plunge into the 20's. Just can't get enough of the Great Smoky Mountains. Very pretty scenery and great skiing is what you get at Cataloochee, and going for a hike on the Asbury Trail is always a perfect adventure. Cataloochee Creek sees pretty high levels of precipitation; the month of May is the wettest with most of the rain while October is typically the driest month. This river is so great.
