Catalooche Campground to Waterville Lake section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III(IV) 6 miles
If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside North Carolina you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. This section of Cataloochee Creek in North Carolina is 6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III(IV) section. The scenic beauty of Haywood County and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is a pretty decent length section, you can
easily run it on an afternoon. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very
popular destination. If you're coming from Newport it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The Catalooche Campground to Waterville Lake section is the only paddling section along Cataloochee Creek. The river winds through the Great Smoky Mountains and you get great scenery.
