The nature scenery of McDowell/Burke County and the water flowing gracefully down Catawba River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section of Catawba River is 12 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II section of whitewater. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. There's camping available near Catawba River. 1234 Bridge to US Route 221 Bridge section is just one of them. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend
to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. fall down to the 50's. During the winter the highs are generally in the 40's with temperatures at Catawba River dipping down into the 10's during winter nights. Catawba River is a rather wet place ordinarily with a good deal of rain; the month with most of the rain is March while December is generally the driest month.
