If you're coming from Boone it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. Lodging is available near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Linville stretch is just one of them. If you've been     whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners.
