The Linville stretch of Catawba River - North Fork in Burke County is 2.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V+ section. The natural beauty of North Carolina and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area
you'll find lots of paddling places. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is a bit of a short stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in
a few times. The starting point is not too far from Boone, as you can see on the road map further down. The river winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come.
