The run to the R. Y. McAden River Access take out point (149 Willow Dr, Gastonia, NC 28056) is approx. 2 hours and 5. 5 miles. Features range from slow moving water w/ intermittent rapids to concentrated rapids at approximate mile 3. 5. There is a dam approximately 5. 5 miles down the river - users must exit the river before the dam. Says Steve The average North Carolina whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so if you're     visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a pretty small number of paddling rivers. The put-in is not too far from Lincolnton, as you can see on the road map further down. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. The natural beauty of Gaston County and the water flowing gracefully down Catawba River - South Fork are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This is an extremely short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.   There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
