Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina are easier than the national norm, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The scenic beauty of McDowell County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. The put-in location is a short drive from Forest City, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning trip. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking
or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling rivers. The Close to Old Fort section of Curtis Creek in McDowell County is 7 miles long and it is classified as a class IV+ section by American Whitewater. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing
to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There are no other sections to paddle along Curtis Creek than the Close to Old Fort section. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus.
Briefly about the general area: Lead Mine Gap is a pleasant site to go to close by. Curtis Creek sees pretty high levels of rain; the
month with most of the rain is March, and the driest of the months is December. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Curtis Creek. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. Daytime highs during the wintertime are in the 40's with temperatures at Curtis Creek dipping down into the 10's during winter nights.
