If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. If you're coming from Forest City it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful scenery of McDowell County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might
end up sleeping in your car. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. The Close to Old Fort section is the only paddling section along Curtis Creek. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day
trip. The Close to Old Fort section of Curtis Creek in North Carolina is 7 miles long and has been rated as a class IV+ section by American Whitewater. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: Curtis Creek generally gets a good deal of rain; March is the wettest month with most rain, and December is when
it's the driest. A journey to Lead Mine Gap is always fun. Through the summer, highs typically are in the 80's at Curtis Creek while nighttime lows are generally in the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's, and overnight lows at Curtis Creek throughout the wintertime frequently sink into the 10's.
