This section of Dan River is 10.4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. The natural beauty of North Carolina and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. The campgrounds here at Dan River are pretty good. If you're coming from
Winston-Salem it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good spots for that around here. The
average North Carolina whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Dan River commonly tend to be in the 80's; all through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. During the winter the highs are mostly in
the 40's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Dan River temperatures plunge to the 20's. Dan River is a reasonably wet place commonly with a good deal of rain; through the month of July you get the most rain around here while January is usually the driest month. While
you're here at Dan River you can take a hike along the Hanging Rock Trail, and if the weather is nice, you can go for a hike along the Cascade Trail.
