The beautiful scenery of North Carolina and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Route 89 to Route 1652 stretch of Dan River in Stokes County is 10.4 miles long and has
been rated as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area
with plenty of places for that. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. The put-in location is a short drive from Winston-Salem, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your sleeping bag.
Briefly about the general area: At Dan River throughout the summer months highs are in the 80's, and all through the night it cools down to the 60's. For the period of the winter this place
gets highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at Dan River drop into the 20's. Going for a hike along the Hanging Rock Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this vicinity, and while you're here you can take a hike along the Cascade
Trail. A large amount of rainfall falls at Dan River; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
