North Carolina whitewater - Dan River, Stokes County Stokes county, Route 1652 to North Carolina Route 772 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     17.8 miles   Hwy 772 access as been roped off with No-Trespassing signs. This access is used a lot during the summer months, but evidently it is private property or someone is confused. Thought I'd let you know this since it's only a few miles from my house. That's a nice place to get in the river, but evidently somebody don't like the general public to use it. Says Jesse William Orr If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding.     The put-in location is a short drive from Winston-Salem, as you can see on the road map further down. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. The beautiful scenery of North Carolina and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. Briefly about the general area: Throughout the long summer days highs here at Dan River get into the 80's. Summer night lows dip down to the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's, and night lows all through the winter for Dan River tend to be in the 20's. The high level of rain makes Dan River a relatively wet place; throughout July this area sees the most rain; the driest month of the year is January.
