North Carolina whitewater - Deep Creek, Great Smoky Mountains, Swain County
Swain
county,
Bryson City section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 3 miles
The starting location is a reasonable drive from Sevierville, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Bryson City section of Deep Creek is 3 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. The nature scenery of Swain County and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. This section is quite short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. You can pitch a
tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so better not forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. There are no other stretches to paddle along Deep Creek than
the Bryson City stretch. There are some good hotels near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. When you're paddling down a Great Smoky Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Deep Creek a wet site; March is the wettest month with most rain; the driest of the months is October. For
the period of the long summer days, highs mostly are in the 80's at Deep Creek while overnight lows are generally in the 60's. Throughout the winter this place gets highs in the 40's, and overnight lows at Deep Creek during the winter ordinarily descend into the 20's.
