This section of Elk River in Avery County is 8.4 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V section. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Boone, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The natural beauty of Avery County and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. There are some good hotels near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because
these hotels fill up quick. The Route 1326 to Route 1305 stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside North Carolina you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so better not forget that many of
the sections here are safe for beginners. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby.
