This section of Elk River is 4.8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V(V+) section. If you're coming from Boone it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this
site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping
in your car. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. The natural beauty of North Carolina and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy.
Briefly about the general area: An average amount of rain falls at Elk River; the month of July is the wettest with
most of the rain while October is mostly the driest month. A wonderful location right next door to Elk River is Cannon Gap, and you can never get enough of the tremendous skiing at Ski Beech. All through the warmest time of the year at Elk River highs are commonly in the 80's,
and during the night it cools down to the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's while the cold winter nights at Elk River are in the 20's.
