The natural beauty of Avery (NC)/Carter (TN) County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Route 130 to bridge above Sone Mtn Church Tennessee stretch of Elk River is 4.8 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V(V+) section by American Whitewater. The starting point is not too far from Boone, please print out a copy of the road
map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The campgrounds here at Elk River are pretty good. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. Getting
some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: From a rainfall point of view Elk River is a relatively normal spot; the month with most of the rain is July; the driest of the months is October. During the summer, highs commonly are in the 80's at Elk River while
nighttime lows are regularly in the 60's. For the period of the winter this place gets highs in the 40's, and night lows in the 20's for Elk River. A pleasant location next to Elk River is Cannon Gap, and a day on the slopes of Ski Beech is just what you need.
