If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The put-in location is a short drive from Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The beautiful scenery of North Carolina and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. 8.4 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The Route 1162 to Route 268 Bridge section is the only paddling section along Elk Creek. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: During the summer at Elk Creek temperatures are typically in the 70's; during summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in
the 30's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Elk Creek. Elk Creek sees pretty high levels of precipitation; during the month of May you get the most rain around here, and the driest month of the year is December.
