North Carolina whitewater - Fisher River, Blue Ridge Mountains, Surry County Surry county, US Route 601 Bridge to Rockford section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     20 miles   If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The starting location is a short drive from Mount Airy, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great plus for this river. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. The US Route 601 Bridge to Rockford section is the only paddling section along Fisher River. There's     camping available near Fisher River. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. This section of Fisher River is 20 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II section of whitewater. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The wonderful Surry County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Fisher River a wet spot; through May this area sees the most rain; the driest month is January. During your trip to Fisher   River you'll meet some people from Mount Airy for sure. Through the days of summer at Fisher River highs are regularly in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's while Fisher River night low temperatures throughout the wintertime are in the 20's.
