North Carolina whitewater - Fisher River, Blue Ridge Mountains, Surry County Surry county, US Route 601 Bridge to Rockford section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     20 miles   The wonderful Surry County scenery and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. This section of Fisher River in North Carolina is 20 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. You can enjoy this     stretch more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great plus for this river. The US Route 601 Bridge to Rockford stretch is the only paddling stretch along Fisher River. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that. The campgrounds here at Fisher River are pretty good. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. The starting location is a short drive from Mount Airy, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Briefly about the general area: Fisher River sees pretty high levels of rain; the month with most of the rain is May, and the driest of the months is January. High temperatures at Fisher River throughout   the warm days of summer are in the 80's. Once the sun is down it dips down to the 50's. High temperatures all through the winter are normally in the 40's; after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Fisher River descend into the 20's.
