The natural beauty of Person/Durham County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. The Route 161 to Lake Michie section of Flat River is 4 miles long and has been rated     as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The starting location is a short drive from Durham, as you can see on the road map further down. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here. Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Flat River frequently tend to be in the 80's, and during the night it cools down to the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Flat River are in the 20's. All the water falling down from   the sky makes Flat River a wet location; the wettest month of the year is generally July, that's the one that rains the most while April is generally the driest month.
