The US Route 501 to Route 1614 section of Flat River in Person/Durham County is 10 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead
and pack your camping stuff. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. If you're coming from Durham it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing
to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers.
Briefly about the general area: During the summer months at Flat River highs are typically in the 80's. Summer overnight lows fall down to the 60's. The wintertime
comes with highs in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Flat River are in the 20's. Flat River sees pretty high levels of precipitation; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain while April is generally the driest month.
