The put-in location is a short drive from Greeneville, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The nature scenery of Transylvania/ Henderson/ Buncombe/ Madison County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might
end up sleeping in your car. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina tend to be more forgiving than the national average,
so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. This stretch of French Broad River in North Carolina is 8.1 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The river winds through the Great Smoky Mountains and you get great scenery. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon.
Briefly about the general area: A good deal of rain falls at
French Broad River; the wettest month of the year is commonly July, that's the one that rains the most while October is frequently the driest month. Near French Broad River you find delightful places like Windy Gap, and there are great spots to discover along the Little Paint Creek
Trail. These mountains rock, just explore all the cool stuff to do in the Great Smoky Mountains. During the summer highs here at French Broad River reach the 80's while night lows are regularly in the 60's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's, and during the dark hours in the wintertime at French Broad River temperatures sink to the 20's.
