This stretch of French Broad River is 8.1 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV section. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in North Carolina are often more forgiving than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Greeneville, as you can see on the road map further down. The river winds through the Great Smoky Mountains and you get great scenery. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to
get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the water flowing gracefully down French Broad River are reasons enough to come here and paddle.
On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that.
Briefly about the general area: Windy Gap is next to French Broad River and is a good site; you can go for a hike on the Little Paint Creek Trail. Summertime at French Broad River arrives
with high temperatures in the 80's, and during the night it cools down to the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at French Broad River. And that's not all there is to do here in the Great Smoky Mountains. French Broad
River is a relatively wet place commonly with lots of rainfall; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain while October is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
