If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside North Carolina you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This section of French Broad River in North Carolina is 8.1 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV section. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you     don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. When you're paddling down a Great Smoky Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning trip. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Barnard to Hot Springs stretch is just one of them. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. The beautiful scenery of North Carolina and the playfulness of the water beats anything. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Briefly about the general area: So many exciting things to do in the Great Smoky Mountains,   not enough time. Windy Gap is a good place to stop by nearby, and why not take a refreshing hike along the Little Paint Creek Trail. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to French Broad River. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down into the 60's. For the period of the winter highs are in the 40's with temperatures at French Broad River dipping down into the 20's through winter nights. Much rainfall falls at French Broad River; throughout July this area sees the most rain, and October on the other hand is the driest.
