The starting point is not too far from Boone, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Roseboro to Lost Cove Creek stretch of Gragg Prong River in Avery County is 1.6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV-V section of whitewater. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
This stretch is short so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. There are no other sections to paddle along Gragg Prong River than the Roseboro to Lost Cove Creek section. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of
spots for that. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The natural beauty of Avery County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle.
Briefly about the general area: Take a hike on the Yancey Ridge Trail; you can have a wonderful hiking adventure along the Daniel
Boone Scout Trail. Gragg Prong River sees pretty high levels of rain; the wettest month of the year is typically May, that's the one that rains the most; the driest of the months is December. At Gragg Prong River during the warmest time of the year highs are in the 70's with
nighttime lows in the 50's. During the winter this place gets highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Gragg Prong River dip into the 10's. These mountains rock, just check out all the amusing stuff to do in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
