Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. This section of Gragg Prong River in Avery County is 1.6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V section. The nature scenery of North Carolina and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This is
the only paddling stretch along Gragg Prong River. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. This is a somewhat short
section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. The starting point is not too far from Boone, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that.
Briefly about the general area: Don't leave Gragg Prong River without first going for a hike along the Yancey Ridge Trail, and tremendous hiking
is available along the Daniel Boone Scout Trail. Gragg Prong River ordinarily gets a good deal of precipitation; May is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is December. Whohoo, so many enjoyable things in one place! The Blue Ridge Mountains is excellent!.
Through the summertime highs here at Gragg Prong River get into the 70's. When the night sets in temperatures fall down into the 50's. High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Gragg Prong River.
