North Carolina whitewater - Green River, Blue Ridge Mountains, Henderson County
Henderson
county,
Tuxedo Powerplant to above Hungry Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III+ 3.7 miles
This stretch of Green River is 3.7 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III+ section by American Whitewater. If you're coming from Asheville it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great
reasons to come. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Tuxedo Powerplant to above Hungry Creek section is just one of them. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this
is an area with plenty of places for that. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This stretch is short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. The nature scenery of Henderson County and the water flowing gracefully down Green River will make you feel great.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Green River a wet
site; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain, and April on the other hand is the driest. The warmest time of the year at Green River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's with night lows in the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Green River are in the 20's. You might want to pay a visit to The Narrows since you're here at Green River.
