The Big Hungry Road to Green River stretch of Hungry River in North Carolina is 1.3 miles long and it is classified as a class IV section by American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. This stretch is very short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The wonderful Henderson County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from
Asheville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are
great reasons to come. The Big Hungry Road to Green River section is the only paddling section along Hungry River. There are many good hotels to choose from, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots.
Briefly about the general area: At Hungry River throughout the summer highs are in the 80's. For the period of the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down into the 60's. For the period of the winter this place gets
highs in the 40's, and nighttime lows in the 20's for Hungry River. The high level of rainfall makes Hungry River a relatively wet spot; March is the wettest month with most rain while January is typically the driest month. The Narrows is a tremendous place to spend some time at.
