The nature scenery of North Carolina and the water flowing gracefully down Johns River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The starting location is a short drive from Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch of Johns River in North Carolina is 6.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. When you're paddling
down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina are easier than the national norm, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. And of course,
there are campgrounds nearby. This is the only paddling section along Johns River. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip.

of the winter highs are in the 40's with temperatures at Johns River dipping down into the 10's during winter nights. Johns River generally gets a great deal of precipitation; through the month of May you get the most rain around here; December is when it's the driest.
