The put-in is not too far from Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir, as you can see on the road map further down. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The nature scenery of Burke/Caldwell County and the cool fresh water have
people coming here. The Route 1328 to Route 1438 section is the only paddling section along Johns River. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this
is an area with plenty of places for that. This section of Johns River in Burke/Caldwell County is 6.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near.
Briefly about the general area: Through the long summer days, highs regularly are in the 70's at Johns River with overnight lows in the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's; after the sun is down all through the wintertime
temperatures at Johns River plunge into the 10's. Johns River is a wet place that gets much precipitation; most of the rain falls throughout May, and the driest month is December.
