North Carolina whitewater - Little River, Durham County Durham county, Johnson U. to US Route 501 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-IV     1.5 miles   The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Durham, as you can see on the road map further down. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside North Carolina you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Johnson U. to US Route 501 section is one of them. This is a somewhat short section     so no need to bring snacks. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Johnson U. to US Route 501 stretch of Little River is 1.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-IV section. The campgrounds here at Little River are pretty good. Briefly about the general area: Little River is a pretty wet place mostly with a large amount of rain; the month of July is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest of the months is April. At Little River through the warm months highs are in the 80's, and throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 60's.
