This section of Mayo River - North Fork is 3.1 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no
problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. This is a pretty short section so you'd better be prepared to walk
your kayak back to put-in a few times. The starting point is not too far from Martinsville, as you can see on the road map further down. The campgrounds here at Mayo River - North Fork are pretty good. Mayo River - North Fork doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Virginia Route 629 to North Carolina Route 1359 section is the only one.
