The scenic beauty of North Carolina and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The average North Carolina whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The put-in location is a short drive from Mount Airy, as you can see on the road map further down. This is the only paddling section along Mitchell River. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here.
If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camp stove.
Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great plus for this river. This section of Mitchell River in North Carolina is 10.5 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater.
Briefly about the general area: Mitchell River is a relatively wet place ordinarily with a good deal of rain; the month with most of the rain is May, and the driest of the
months is January. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Mitchell River. Summer nighttime lows dip down to the 50's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 40's with temperatures at Mitchell River dipping down into the 20's through winter nights.
