The beautiful scenery of Surry County and the water flowing gracefully down Mitchell River beats anything. This is the only paddling stretch along Mitchell River. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. This stretch of Mitchell River is 10.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American     Whitewater. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. The put-in location is a short drive from Mount Airy, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Lodging is available near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. Briefly about the general area: A lot of rainfall falls at Mitchell River; May is the month that gets the most rain, and January meanwhile is the driest month. Through the days of summer highs here at Mitchell River get into   the 80's. Throughout the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 50's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 40's; overnight lows during the winter for Mitchell River tend to be in the 20's.
