Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This section of Nantahala River in North Carolina is 0.7 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. This is an extremely short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in
a few times. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. The beautiful Great Smoky Mountains scenery is an added bonus. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. If you're a camper you
can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The natural beauty of North Carolina and the playfulness of the water have people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: Winding Stairs is something you shouldn't miss if you're here at Nantahala River, and a short spree to Queens Falls is always worthwhile. If you like the outdoors you'll like it here in the Great Smoky Mountains.
