Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The starting location is a short drive from North Wilkesboro, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of North Carolina and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. For all you camping people there
are campgrounds nearby. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff. The Stuart Dam to US 221/21 section of New River in North Carolina is 11 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II section of whitewater. The beauty
of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great plus for this river. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summer months at New River highs
are commonly in the 80's; throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's with temperatures at New River dipping down into the 20's during winter nights. New River is a pretty wet place generally with a good deal of precipitation; the month with most of the rain is July, and the driest of the months is November.
