  Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. The starting location is a reasonable drive from North Wilkesboro, as you can see on the road map further down. The natural beauty of North Carolina and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. If you
    hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before
you come because it is a very popular destination. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This stretch of New River in Alleghany NC/Grayson VA County is 11 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The river winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of  
people coming here. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of places for that. The Stuart Dam to US 221/21 section is one of many paddling sections in this river system.

Briefly about the general area:
During your spree to New River you'll meet some people from Piney Creek for sure. Everybody loves Stone Mountain State Park; hiking along the Crigger Creek Trail is splendid fun. This river has so much to offer. A trip to New River State Park revitalizes the spirit; you can have a nice hiking adventure along the Little Dry Run Trail.
