The scenic beauty of North Carolina and the playfulness of the water beats anything. The US Route 221/21 to US Route 58/221 section of New River in Alleghany NC/Grayson VA County is 23.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. The river winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This is not the only paddling section in this river
system, there are others too. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. Whether you're whitewater
rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. The campgrounds here at New River are pretty good. For the period of the wintertime highs are commonly in the 40's, and through the dark hours in the wintertime at New River temperatures descend to the 10's.
