This stretch of New River in Alleghany NC/Grayson VA County is 23.5 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. places. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river,
but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. If you're coming from North Wilkesboro it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well.

All through the warm months at New River highs are generally in the 80's while night lows are generally in the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's with temperatures at New River dipping down into the 10's throughout winter nights.
