If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so better not forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. If you're coming from North Wilkesboro it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your camping stuff
too. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. This section of New River is 23.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. For
all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. The scenic beauty of North Carolina and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers.
Briefly about the general area: At New River through the warmest time of the year highs are in the 80's, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's.
Daytime highs through the winter are in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to New River. From a rainfall point of view New River is a reasonably common spot; July is when you get the most rain here while January is ordinarily the driest month.
