This section of New River - South Fork in North Carolina is 61 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The put-in location is a short drive from North Wilkesboro, as you can see on the road map further down. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in North Carolina are often more forgiving than in other states, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very
demanding. The wonderful Watauga/ Ashe/ Alleghany County scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people.
This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Route 1347 to Mouth of Wilson section is just one of them. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so it looks like you will be camping out.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes New River - South Fork a wet place; most of the rain falls through July, and the
driest month of the year is November. High temperatures at New River - South Fork throughout the months of summer are in the 80's. Once the sun is down it dips down to the 50's. All through the winter this place gets highs in the 40's; after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at New River - South Fork plunge into the 20's.
