  The starting location is a reasonable drive from North Wilkesboro, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Route 1347 to Mouth of Wilson stretch of New River - South Fork in Watauga/ Ashe/ Alleghany County is 61 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in
    North Carolina are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for
that around here. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Route 1347 to Mouth of Wilson section is just one of many. Whitewater paddling here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. The wonderful Watauga/ Ashe/ Alleghany County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down New River - South Fork will make you feel great. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. Now this is a pretty long section, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. The campgrounds here at New River  
- South Fork are pretty good.

New River - South Fork is a reasonably wet place ordinarily with a large amount of rain; July is the month that gets the most rain while November is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
For the duration of the warm months here at New River - South Fork, high temperatures regularly get into the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures fall down into the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's, and overnight lows in the 20's for New River - South Fork.
