  This section of North Harper Creek in North Carolina is 9 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V(V+) section by American Whitewater. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in North Carolina are often more forgiving than in other states, so keep in mind that rivers in this state are less demanding. The beautiful scenery of Avery/Caldwell County and the cool fresh water beats anything. If you're a camper you can camp
    at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. This
section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. If you're coming from Boone it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Wilson Creek Tributary  
section is one of them. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.

Briefly about the general area:
The best way to spend a winter day is on the slopes of nearby Sugar Mountain. Hiking is a popular thing to do around North Harper Creek; Daniel Boone Scout Trail is a splendid local trail. At North Harper Creek you always meet someone from Pineola; there's perfect hiking along the Yancey Ridge Trail. Coming to this river is always a good idea. North Harper Creek is a wet location that gets a great deal of rainfall.
