This section of North Harper Creek in North Carolina is 9 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V(V+) section. The nature scenery of North Carolina and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling spots. The average North Carolina whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere.
A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is
a very popular destination. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The river winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. The put-in location is a short drive from Boone, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at North Harper Creek during the months of summer are in the 70's. For the period of the
dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 50's. All through the wintertime highs are mostly in the 40's while North Harper Creek nighttime low temperatures through the winter are in the 10's. The high level of rain makes North Harper Creek a quite wet spot; the month
with most of the rain is May; December is the month with the least moisture. Don't leave North Harper Creek without first going for a hike along the Yancey Ridge Trail.
