Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina are easier than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The put-in is not too far from Brevard, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The wonderful Jackson County scenery and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There are some good hotels near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There's camping available
near Norton Creek. The Above Thorpe Lake section of Norton Creek in North Carolina is 2.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V(V+) section. There are no other sections to paddle along Norton Creek than the Above Thorpe Lake section. The river winds through
the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that. This is a somewhat short section so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came.
Briefly about the general area: Yeah, come up here to the Blue Ridge Mountains for a splendid time. High temperatures at Norton Creek during the warm days of summer are in the 80's.
All through the moonlight hours it's typically in the 60's. Throughout the winter highs are frequently in the 40's; overnight lows at Norton Creek through the winter ordinarily descend into the 20's. Going for a hike on the Shortoff Mountain Trail is always a great adventure,
and you can go for a hike on the Whiteside Mountain National Recreation Trail. Norton Creek ordinarily gets much rainfall; most of the rain falls all through March while October is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
