The starting location is a short drive from Brevard, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The beautiful scenery of Jackson County and the water flowing gracefully down Norton Creek are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very
popular destination. This is a bit of a short stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Whitewater paddling here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a
lot of people coming here. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The Above Thorpe Lake stretch of Norton Creek in North Carolina is 2.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V(V+) section. This is the only paddling stretch along Norton Creek.
Briefly about the general area: For the period of the long summer days here at Norton Creek, high temperatures generally
get into the 80's while overnight lows are generally in the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's, and through the dark hours in the winter at Norton Creek temperatures drop to the 20's. You definitely ought to love the Blue Ridge Mountains. Norton Creek is a wet site
that gets much rainfall; March is the wettest month with most rain while October is the month with the least amount of precipitation. There's nice hiking along the Shortoff Mountain Trail; the Whiteside Mountain National Recreation Trail offers hiking at its best.
