CLASS I-III 26.7 miles
The Confluence of East-West Fork to New Hepco Bidge section of Pigeon River in North Carolina is 26.7 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-III section of whitewater. The wonderful Haywood County scenery and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. Whitewater paddling here in the Great Smoky Mountains is a great experience. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your
camping stuff too. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other
states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The starting location is a short drive from Asheville, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too.
