The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Newport, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The beautiful scenery of North Carolina and the water flowing gracefully down Pigeon River have people coming here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina are easier than the national norm, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good
rivers for that around here. The wild scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains is great. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. This stretch of Pigeon River is 7.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater
to be a class IV-V section. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Harmon Den to Big Creek stretch is just one of them.
Briefly about the general area: Man, is there lots of cool stuff to do in the Great Smoky Mountains. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Big Branch Trail. The high
level of rainfall makes Pigeon River a quite wet place; through May this area sees the most rain, and the driest of the months is October. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Pigeon River, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. For the duration
of the winter highs are in the 40's, and night lows at Pigeon River during the wintertime commonly descend into the 20's. Since you're here at Pigeon River why not pop by Messer Gap, and do take a hike on the Asbury Trail.
