The starting location is a reasonable drive from Newport, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Harmon Den to Big Creek section of Pigeon River in Haywood County is 7.2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V section. The natural beauty of Haywood County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside
this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. When you're paddling down
a Great Smoky Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Harmon Den to Big Creek stretch is just one of them. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. The campgrounds here at Pigeon River are pretty good.
Briefly about the general area: The Asbury Trail is a pleasant hiking trail in close
proximity to Pigeon River, and close by Messer Gap is a perfect location to go. Pigeon River is a wet place that gets much precipitation; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain while October is the month with the least amount of precipitation. High temperatures
at Pigeon River all through the summer are in the 80's. Throughout the moonlight hours it's typically in the 60's. Highs through the wintertime are generally in the 40's, and overnight lows in the 20's for Pigeon River. Be careful coming to the Great Smoky Mountains, you might not ever wanna go home again. If the weather is wonderful here at Pigeon River, you can go for a hike along the Big Branch Trail.
