The average North Carolina whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This stretch of Pigeon River in North Carolina is 7.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V section. If you're coming from Newport it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful Great Smoky Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Whether
you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. This stretch has has enough mileage, suitable for an afternoon
trip. The nature scenery of Haywood County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: Through the days of summer here at Pigeon River, high temperatures generally reach the 80's; the nighttime is a bit chillier of course, typically in the 60's. High temperatures throughout the wintertime are normally
in the 40's while Pigeon River night low temperatures all through the winter are in the 20's. Pigeon River gets a great deal of water; the month of May is the wettest with most of the rain, and October meanwhile is the driest month. A tremendous spot in the vicinity of Pigeon
River is Messer Gap, and going for a hike along the Big Branch Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area. This place, the Great Smoky Mountains, has so much outdoors fun things. If the weather is great here at Pigeon River, you can go for a hike along the Asbury Trail.
