This stretch of Pigeon River in Cocke County is 4.66 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III+ section of whitewater. The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The starting location is a short drive from Newport, as you can see on the road map further down. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. Getting some
good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. This stretch is mid length, it's perfect for a one day trip. This is not the only
paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains is a great plus for this river. The campgrounds here at Pigeon River are pretty good.
Briefly about the general area: Pigeon River is a quite wet place typically with a good deal of rain; through the month of May you get the most rain around here, and the driest of the months is October.

Baxter Creek Trail. Summer at Pigeon River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's. Summer night lows plunge down to the 60's. Highs during the wintertime are ordinarily in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Pigeon River are in the 20's.
