The Big Creek to Hartford section of Pigeon River in North Carolina is 4.66 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III+ section of whitewater. The scenic beauty of North Carolina and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Great exercise and just hanging
out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Big Creek to Hartford stretch is just one of many. The river winds through the Great Smoky Mountains and you get great scenery. There's camping available
near Pigeon River. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in North Carolina are often more forgiving than in other states, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners.

hiking adventure along the Stone Mountain Trail. During the summer months highs here at Pigeon River get into the 80's. Summer night lows sink down to the 60's. Throughout the winter highs are ordinarily in the 40's while Pigeon River overnight low temperatures during the winter
are in the 20's. Going for a hike along the Baxter Creek Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this vicinity, and Moore Hollow is a wonderful place to explore. All the water falling down from the sky makes Pigeon River a wet spot; the month with most of the rain is May while October is generally the driest month.
