North Carolina whitewater - Roanoke River, Northampton County Northampton county, North Carolina Route 48 to 1/2 mile downstream of US 301 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-III     5.6 miles   This section of Roanoke River is 5.6 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Northampton County and the water flowing gracefully down Roanoke River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This stretch has has enough mileage, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There are some good hotels near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater     rafting or kayaking, either way around here you won't find a large number of other places. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside North Carolina you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. If you're coming from Roanoke Rapids it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Roanoke River ordinarily tend to be in the 80's. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 60's. Highs throughout the winter are generally in the 40's; throughout the dark   hours in the wintertime at Roanoke River temperatures fall to the 20's. Roanoke River is a quite wet place ordinarily with lots of precipitation; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain; the driest of the months is April.
