The starting point is not too far from Roanoke Rapids, as you can see on the road map further down. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The North Carolina Route 48 to 1/2 mile downstream of US 301 section is the only paddling section along Roanoke River. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. Great exercise     and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. This stretch of Roanoke River is 5.6 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Briefly about the general area: Lots of rain falls at Roanoke River; August is the wettest month with most rain, and April on the other hand is the driest. Through the months of summer highs here at Roanoke River reach the 80's. Summer nighttime lows dip down to the 60's.
