The Forest Service road 81 to Santeetlah Lake stretch of Santeetlah River in Graham County is 5 miles long and is a class II-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The beautiful Great Smoky Mountains scenery is an added bonus. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Forest Service road 81 to Santeetlah Lake section is one of     them. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Briefly about the general area: If you would like a little side visit, try Horse Cove. At Santeetlah River during the long summer days highs are in the 80's. Summer overnight   lows plunge down to the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's with temperatures at Santeetlah River dipping down into the 20's throughout winter nights.
