The natural beauty of North Carolina and the cool fresh water beats anything. The Forest Service road 81 to Santeetlah Lake stretch of Santeetlah River is 5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV section of whitewater. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations     you might end up sleeping in your car. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. The river winds through the Great Smoky Mountains and you get great scenery. Briefly about the general area: Santeetlah River gets a great deal of water; March is the month that gets the most rain while October is the month with the least amount of precipitation. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's   to Santeetlah River, and the overnight is a bit colder of course, regularly in the 60's. Highs throughout the wintertime are generally in the 40's while Santeetlah River night low temperatures during the winter are in the 20's.
