North Carolina whitewater - Santeetlah River, Great Smoky Mountains, Graham County Graham county, Forest Service road 81 to Santeetlah Lake section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-IV     5 miles   This stretch of Santeetlah River in North Carolina is 5 miles long and has been rated as a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. The beautiful scenery of Graham County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. The river winds through the Great Smoky Mountains     and you get great scenery. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. Briefly about the general area: Horse Cove is a splendid place to take a look at in close proximity to Santeetlah River. All the water falling down from the sky makes Santeetlah River a wet place; the month of March is the wettest with most of the   rain while October is commonly the driest month. At Santeetlah River through the warm days of summer highs are in the 80's while nighttime lows are commonly in the 60's. For the period of the winter this place gets highs in the 40's; after the sun is down all through the winter temperatures at Santeetlah River descend into the 20's.
