North Carolina whitewater - Slickrock Creek, Great Smoky Mountains, Graham/ County Graham/ county, Big Fat Gap to Lake Cheoh section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS III-V     6.5 miles   This stretch of Slickrock Creek is 6.5 miles long and it is classified as a class III-V section by American Whitewater. The put-in location is a short drive from Knoxville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for     lots of people. The Big Fat Gap to Lake Cheoh stretch is the only paddling stretch along Slickrock Creek. The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in North Carolina are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. When you're paddling down a Great Smoky Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip. Briefly about the general area: Slickrock Creek is a wet place that gets a lot of rain; March is when you get the most rain here while October   is the month with the least amount of precipitation. A delightful place to pop by in the neighborhood of Slickrock Creek is Big Fat Gap; a short trip to Lower Falls is always worthwhile. Yep, outdoors entertaining stuff truly is abundant here in the Great Smoky Mountains. The Big Stack Gap Branch Trail offers hiking at its best; Lower Falls is a delightful site to visit while you're at Slickrock Creek. If you come to this river you will have a good time for sure. Slickrock Creek is right by the Stiffknee Trail. Through the summertime months here at Slickrock Creek, high temperatures typically get into the 80's, and the night is a little colder of course, generally in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's, and nighttime lows at Slickrock Creek during the winter frequently descend into the 20's.
