This stretch of Steels Creek is 6.6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The starting location is a short drive from Boone, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina are easier than the national norm, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The scenic beauty of Burke County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come
here and paddle. The to Confluence with Upper Creek stretch is the only paddling stretch along Steels Creek. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. The river winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. You
might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: Steels Creek commonly gets a lot of rain; during May this area sees the most rain, and December on the other hand is the driest. At Steels Creek all through the long summer days highs are in the 70's with
nighttime lows in the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Steels Creek fall into the 10's.
