The nature scenery of North Carolina and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular
destination. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The to Confluence with Upper Creek stretch of Steels Creek in Burke County is 6.6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. This stretch has has enough mileage, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There are no other sections to paddle along Steels Creek than the to Confluence with Upper Creek section.
Briefly about the general area: Summer brings highs in the 70's to Steels Creek. When the night sets in temperatures plunge down
into the 50's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 40's with temperatures at Steels Creek dipping down into the 10's all through winter nights. Steels Creek sees pretty high levels of rain; May is the wettest month with most rain; December is when it's the driest.
