The Downtown Rocky Mount stretch of Tar River in North Carolina is 1 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I(IV) section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The wonderful Nash County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Tar River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section is very short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The put-in location
is a short drive from Rocky Mount, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming
back for more. No shortage of good hotels, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Tar River frequently tend to be in the 80's. All through the dark hours of summer temperatures dip down into the 60's. High temperatures throughout the winter are normally in the 40's with temperatures at Tar River dipping down into the 20's through winter nights. You're sure to run into some friendly people from Rocky Mount here; Little Falls is a great local attraction.
Tar River sees pretty high levels of rain; most of the rain falls all through August while April is generally the driest month. It's always brilliant to pop by Little Falls.
