Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The nature scenery of Caldwell County and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Boone, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch of Thunderhole Creek in Caldwell County is 3.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III+ section. This section is quite short so you'll have to walk back to
the start over and over. There are no other sections to paddle along Thunderhole Creek than the Globe Road to Upton section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. There are campgrounds quite near the
river where you can camp. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. Whitewater paddling here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience.
Briefly about the general area: For the period of the warm days of summer at Thunderhole Creek temperatures are usually in the 70's. Once the sun is down it falls down to the 50's. The wintertime brings
highs down to the 40's with temperatures at Thunderhole Creek dipping down into the 10's all through winter nights. Boyd Gap is a nice place to explore nearby, and you'll never forgive yourself if you don’t go skiing at Appalachian Mountain since you're here. Thunderhole Creek
gets a great deal of water; the month of May is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month of the year is December. So many amusing things in the Blue Ridge Mountains, just astonishing.
