Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. The Carolina Hemlocks Camp to Route 1131 section of Toe River - South is 22.5 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The campgrounds here at Toe River - South are pretty good. Whitewater paddling
here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. The nature scenery of Avery/ Mitchell/ Yancey County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large
number of paddling spots. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. If you're coming from Johnson City it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Toe River - South doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Carolina Hemlocks Camp to Route 1131 stretch is the only one. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your camping stuff too.
