This stretch of Tuckasegee River - West Fork in Jackson County is 9.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV+(V) section of whitewater. The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Tuckasegee River - West Fork are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. The Thorpe Dam to Tuckasegee River section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. The nearby hotels are a
bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Brevard, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.
Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day trip. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside North Carolina you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that.
