If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside North Carolina you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This is the only paddling section along Upper Creek. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your camping     stuff. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. The Raven Cliff Gorge to FR 982 section of Upper Creek in Burke County is 17 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III+(IV) section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Boone, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Briefly about the general area: Upper Creek gets a large amount of water; the wettest month of the year is regularly May, that's the one that rains the most while December   is the month with the least amount of precipitation. At Upper Creek all through the summer highs are in the 70's. Summer nighttime lows drop down to the 50's. Highs through the winter are typically in the 40's, and night lows at Upper Creek all through the winter commonly descend into the 10's.
