The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Asheville, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Madison County and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina are easier than the national norm, so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll
find a large number of good spots. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The US 25/70 to Barnard stretch of Walnut Creek in North Carolina is 4 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV(V) section of whitewater. Walnut Creek doesn't have
a lot of paddling sections, the US 25/70 to Barnard section is the only one. The wild scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains is great. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip.

A delightful spot in the vicinity of Walnut Creek is Old Station Gap. At Walnut Creek during the summer months highs are in the 80's. Throughout the moonlight hours it's generally in the 60's. For the period of the winter the highs are regularly in the 40's, and after the sun is down throughout the wintertime temperatures at Walnut Creek plunge into the 20's.
