  The starting location is a reasonable drive from Asheville, as you can see on the road map further down. The scenic beauty of Madison County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. The Great Smoky Mountains scenery is wonderful. This stretch of Walnut Creek is 4 miles
    long and is a class III-IV(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that rivers in this state are less
demanding. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the US 25/70 to Barnard section is one of them. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back  
for more.

Briefly about the general area:
While you're here at Walnut Creek you can take a hike along the Pounding Mill Trail, and a glorious place to take a look at close by is Old Station Gap. And if that's not enough there's plenty more cool stuff to do in the Great Smoky Mountains. Going for a hike along the Little Paint Creek Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this vicinity. There are plenty of folks from Marshall here at Walnut Creek. Walnut Creek frequently gets lots of rain. Of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain, and October is when it's the driest.
