  The nature scenery of Watauga County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. This section of Watauga River in Watauga County is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. There are some good hotels near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors
    are sure to keep you coming back for more. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The starting point is not too far from Boone, as you can see on the road map further down. This is a bit of a short stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the
river in one stretch. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the SR 1557 to North Carolina 105 section is just one of many.

Briefly about the general area:
A splendid location to explore close to Watauga River is Young Hollow, and there are plenty of people from Boone here.
Watauga River is a wet spot that gets much rainfall; during May this area sees the most rain while December is mostly the driest month. All through the summer months highs here at Watauga River get into the 70's. Once the sun is down it sinks down
 
to the 50's. Through the winter highs are in the 40's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Watauga River fall into the 10's.
