North Carolina whitewater - Whiteoak Creek, Great Smoky Mountains, Macon County Macon county, Above Nantahala Cascades section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV-V+     2 miles   If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The wonderful Macon County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Whiteoak Creek have people coming here. The Above Nantahala Cascades stretch of Whiteoak Creek in North Carolina is 2 miles long and is a class IV-V+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming     from far and near. This section is quite short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whitewater paddling here in the Great Smoky Mountains is a great experience. There are no other stretches to paddle along Whiteoak Creek than the Above Nantahala Cascades stretch. Briefly about the general area: Whiteoak Creek is a wet place that gets lots of precipitation; July is the wettest month with most rain while October is typically the driest month. Summertime highs at Whiteoak   Creek regularly tend to be in the 80's. During the dark hours of summer temperatures sink down into the 60's. Highs throughout the wintertime are usually in the 40's, and through the dark hours in the wintertime at Whiteoak Creek temperatures plunge to the 20's. Whohoo, so many enjoyable things in one place! The Great Smoky Mountains is so good!. A delightful place to take a look at close to Whiteoak Creek is Poplar Cove; on a fine day you can take a hike along the Wesser Creek Trail.
