The Upper Wilson section of Wilson Creek is 5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The natural beauty of Avery/Caldwell County and the water flowing gracefully down Wilson Creek will make you feel great. There's camping available near Wilson Creek. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book
a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. Whitewater paddling
here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Upper Wilson stretch is just one of them. The put-in is not too far from Boone, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near.
Briefly about the general area: Wilson Creek is a quite wet place generally with much rainfall; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain; the driest
month is December. Having a splendid time in the Blue Ridge Mountains is simple. Summer at Wilson Creek arrives with high temperatures in the 70's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures dip down into the 50's. Daytime highs during the wintertime are in the 40's with
winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Wilson Creek. There's tremendous hiking along the Yancey Ridge Trail, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Wilson Creek; Daniel Boone Scout Trail is a splendid local trail.
