If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The starting location is a short drive from Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either     way there are lots of good places for that around here. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This is the only paddling stretch along Yadkin River. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your camp stove too. This stretch of Yadkin River in North Carolina is 19.9 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. Briefly about the general area: Happy Valley is a brilliant location to explore. For the duration of the summer months at Yadkin River highs are commonly in   the 60's; the nighttime is rather colder of course, mostly in the 50's. During the wintertime highs are regularly in the 30's, and all through the dark hours in the winter at Yadkin River temperatures descend to the 10's. Yadkin River is a relatively wet place commonly with much precipitation; June is the wettest month with most rain while December is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
