The Route 268 Bridge to Route 1137 stretch of Yadkin River in Caldwell/Wilkes County is 19.9 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The natural beauty of North Carolina and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The river winds through the Blue
Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. The campgrounds here at Yadkin River are pretty good. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. If you're coming from Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir it's not
a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The Route 268 Bridge to Route 1137 section is the only paddling section along Yadkin River. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove.
