The starting location is a reasonable drive from North Wilkesboro, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The river winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more.     This stretch of Yadkin River in Wilkes County is 15 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina are easier than the national norm, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. Yadkin River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Route 1178 below West Kerr Scott Dam to Route 2327 stretch is the only one. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camping stuff. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Briefly about the general area: The high level of rain makes Yadkin River a reasonably wet place; most of the rain falls all   through June, and the driest month is November. During the warm days of summer at Yadkin River temperatures are generally in the 80's; through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the 40's, and night lows all through the wintertime for Yadkin River tend to be in the 20's.
