The starting location is a reasonable drive from Ashtabula, as you can see on the road map further down. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. This stretch is short so no need to bring snacks. The Grand River Tributary stretch of Paine Creek is 3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III(V) section. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you won't
find a large number of other rivers. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations
in advance you're all set. The beautiful scenery of Ohio and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There's camping available near Paine Creek.
Briefly about the general area: The amount of rain that falls at Paine Creek is close to the national average; September is the wettest month with most rain, and February is the month with the least moisture. At Paine Creek through the warm days of summer highs are in the 80's, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 30's; night lows in the 10's for Paine Creek. A tour to Indian Point next to Paine Creek is always a great idea.
