Ohio whitewater - Vermilion River, Erie County Erie county, Below Mill Hollow section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I     5.5 miles   The Below Mill Hollow stretch of Vermilion River in Ohio is 5.5 miles long and has been rated as a class I section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Ohio are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The wonderful Erie County scenery and the playfulness of the water beats anything. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Below Mill     Hollow section is one of them. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. If you're coming from Sandusky it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling spots. Briefly about the general area: Through the summer at Vermilion River temperatures are mostly in the 80's. Through the moonlight hours it's typically in the 60's. Through the wintertime highs are commonly in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Vermilion River. During   your stay at Vermilion River do go to nearby Main Street Beach. From a precipitation point of view Vermilion River is a rather normal place; the month with most of the rain is June, and the driest of the months is February.
