The Above Highway 63 to Highway 259 at Big Cedar section of Kiamichi River in Oklahoma is 7 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The beautiful Ouachita Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Oklahoma is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The Above Highway 63 to Highway 259 at Big Cedar section is the only paddling section along Kiamichi River. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. The natural beauty of Le Flore County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Since you're on this site you are probably
into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Kiamichi River a wet place; the month with most of the rain is May, and January is when it's the
driest. Summer at Kiamichi River arrives with high temperatures in the 90's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 50's, and after the sun is down throughout the wintertime temperatures at Kiamichi River plunge into the 20's.
